Attack of the (MakerBot) Clones
With the recent purchase of our MakerBot Replicator 2, we have experienced first hand the quality and capabilities of a MakerBot product. The MakerBot Digitizer seems to be on par with the Replicator 2. The Digitizer is a desktop 3D scanner that allows you to take an object, scan it, then print it on the Replicator (among other 3D printers). This device uses two eye-safe lasers, a 1.3 megapixel camera and a turntable to scan objects up to 8″ in diameter and 8″ in height, taking just a few minutes to recreate them, down to a 0.5mm resolution, in one of several 3D file formats. Once an object is scanned you can make changes and even add to your now 3D object to make your own creation with MakerBot’s MakerWare software. The best thing of all is absolutely no CAD skills are required to operate the device and software, making it extremely user-friendly. What would you create with the MakerBot Digitizer?
