STEAM Santa Monica Pier: 2nd Annual Rube Goldberg Contest Photo Recap

This Saturday I took a trip to Santa Monica to check out the 2nd Annual Rube Goldberg Contest. The STEAM event was intended to highlight the importance of an arts education along with science, technology, engineering and math. High school and college students from Venice to Pomona gathered to present their over-engineered contraptions at the Santa Monica Pier. Their complicated rigs were supposed to erase a chalkboard.  The competitors used a wide array of toys and gadgets such as Hot Wheel cars, marbles, dominoes and even a Nerf gun to complete the task. Although the teams had set up their machines, the pier was not playing nice – the uneven boardwalk and winds forced the teams to constantly make small adjustments. Feast your eyes on the convoluted contraptions below!

Although the STEAM event revolved around the Rube Goldberg showcase, there were plenty of artsy and creative activities for the whole family!
